ABOUT THE VSFA

The VSFA also provides other key benefits to its members.  A semi-annual color glossy magazine "The Virginia Firefighter"  is circulated to the member departments.  Members can elect to participate in a Group Life Insurance program and are supported in time of need by the Ladies Auxiliary.  The association is also very active in legislative issues.  Some of the legislative accomplishments of the VSFA include:

• The fire fund each department receives from the state each year.
• Affordable Workers' Compensation Insurance for volunteers.
• Legalized red lights for the private automobiles of volunteer firefighters.
• State law making it illegal to run over a fire hose.
• Exemption of volunteer fire companies from assessment of real and personal property.
• Granting fire officials police powers at the scene of fires.
• Toll free passage of fire equipment of state operated toll bridges.
• Legalized Bingo to support the Fire Service
• Establishment of an official "Dogwood Day" for Firefighter's relief.
• Special License plates for Volunteer Firefighters
• Retirement plan for Volunteer Firefighters
