COURTLAND—After working all night to put out the fire, emergency crews are working to prevent extension and rekindles in the Hancock Peanut Company warehouse, said Major Gene Drewery, spokesperson for the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office.
The fire is no longer openly burning, but there is still smoke coming from it, Drewery said. They are trying to get the peanuts out of the building in an effort to stop the spread of the fire to another warehouse, he added.
Drewery said he did not know if the warehouse could be saved at this point.
